The second-most frequent conversation I've been asked this month is "What are you doing for your senior program?" (Senior program is the independent project seniors at our school complete in May.)
I always reply, "Eating."
"What? Aren't you supposed to actually do something?"
"Yeah...I'm eating."
"That's like getting credit for breathing. What a slacker."
"Ohh, let me clarify: my senior program is food writing."
"Food...writing?"
"Yeah. Writing about food."
"People do that? Oh, like reviews?"
"Yup - I'm excited."
"Me too. When are you bringing me out for lunch?"

I'm Heidi.
I've always liked writing, and even before that, I liked eating. For me, food writing intersects both realms. This blog will document my interactions with food - and some of yours, via feedback from comments and even guest bloggers. One of the larger themes of this blog will be how cultures are expressed in food. On this blog, I'll be writing restaurant reviews for (mostly) Minnesota as well as personal essays. Soon, I'll be investigating what "chocolatey chips" really are. I'm not a cook - as my friends know, the closest thing I have to a gourmet specialty is Pizza Rolls (Totino's), but I might try to make something. I'll keep you updated on that, too.
As for the name of the blog, Foodivia: it's a portmanteau of "food" and "trivia" - two of my very favorite topics. Where does the trivia come in? Well, this is a learning experience for me, from the writing to the eating, and I'm excited to take advantage of all the fun tidbits that will come along. There'll be a regular "Did you know?" feature - ranging from cooking techniques to weird facts about snack foods. (For your information, the Golden Gate Bridge is 28,800 Oreos long. I have an "Oreo Trivia" mug that tells me these things...)

Heidi this Foodivia blog looks very intriguing! I am really looking forward to future installments.
Also, I saw on Kare 11 (or at least I think it was Kare 11) a special on Spam consumption in Hawaii. I believe that it is airing tonight, but I am not really sure. The story might be interesting, so I thought I would let you know.
There is actually a festival in Hawaii called the Waikiki Spam® Jam and it is held every year. (http://www.spamjamhawaii.com/) And there is something called Spam Musubi that is considered a delicacy in Hawaii (http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/Spam.htm). Check it out. It might be amusing.

By the way, did you know that Zwieback is German for 'twice baked', and refers to a sweetened bread that is sliced and then rebaked or toasted until dry and dry and crisp. Zwieback is available in the baby section of your local grocery store--babies love to teethe on them.
Hey Heidi, after reading one of the other comments, I realized that today I might have had "musubi" (I call it "fan tuan" in Mandarin, literally translated as "rice wrap," I think). I had it at Auntie Eileen's. You should ask her for the recipe. It wasn't triangle shaped like the ones you see at Asian markets, but it was a roll the size of a corn dog. I think it's the ideal lunch to bring to work since it shouldn't stink up the office (unless it has pungent daikon in it). Maybe you could do a feature on it. I'd like to hear your thoughts.
